LEADER aims to improve the competitiveness and diversification of the farming and forestry industry, whilst supporting small businesses, creating growth and boosting productivity in rural communities.

We have a number of LEADER programmes in our area. The main ones, in terms of the GCGP area covered, are Rural Peterborough and Rutland; the Cambridgeshire Fens; West Norfolk; and the Eastern Plateau.

LEADER programmes are local, community-driven initiatives, each managed by a Local Action Group (LAG). These programmes can support projects that:

  • Increase farm productivity
  • Provide support for micro and small businesses (non-agricultural) and farm diversification
  • Boost rural tourism
  • Provide rural services
  • Provide cultural and heritage activity
  • Increase forestry productivity

To be eligible for funding, businesses must be located within:

  • Rural Peterborough and Rutland LEADER area, which includes rural areas of Peterborough, Rutland, Yaxley, and Farcet;
  • Cambridgeshire Fens LEADER area, which includes rural areas of March, Ely, Somersham, Haddenham, Stretham and more;
  • West Norfolk LEADER area, which includes most of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk;
  • Eastern Plateau LEADER area, which includes North Hertfordshire and Uttlesford (Essex);
  • In addition, the GCGP area includes parts of the Greensand Ridge, Beds and Hunts Claylands, Wool Towns, Brecks, Wash Fens and Chilterns LEADER areas. Details of these can be found here.

The 2014-20 LEADER programme is delivered across England as part of the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE), funded from the European Agricultural Development Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
