Designed to help anyone in business – particularly the newly self-employed and new employers, HMRC’s Business Education and Support Teams offer free tax workshops and seminars on a range of topics including Self Assessment Returns, National Insurance Contributions, VAT, International Trade, payroll and expenses.

You can talk about queries and issues with trained advisors and gain some practical experience in areas such as calculations and completion of forms. You will also be given useful reference material like leaflets and practical guides.

In addition to these workshops and events, HMRC have launched a free e-learning package called ‘Starting Your Own Business’. It covers tax and National Insurance topics relevant to those new to self-employment – including registration, record-keeping, business expenses, etc. – as well as VAT and taking on staff.
