Ran by BEST Growth Hub, this 3 hour workshop is ideal for anyone who runs or manages a small/medium enterprise and wants to better understand book keeping.

Why attend Book Keeping Basics?

All businesses are required to keep financial records for legal reasons. By understanding income source and expenses outputs, the business can then understand profit and cash generation. Without appropriate records or control mechanisms, finding out the cash or profit status is often too late. This workshop will explain how to structure and use financial records, how to develop a monitoring system and an introduction into taxation (including VAT
and National Insurance), making you more aware and able to either manage your own books or those doing them for you.

What’s covered?

  • What is book keeping
  • The different methods (single vs double, computer vs paper)
  • What needs to be recorded and how
  • Debits and Credits
  • Cash Books
  • Banking and Cash
  • Profit and Loss
  • The Balance Sheet
  • VAT & other Taxation, allowances.

What will I gain from attending?

After this workshop you will understand how your own books should be compiled, what information you need to record and when and what questions you should be asking of an accountant or book keeper. On completion of this workshop you will be automatically referred to one of the BEST Growth Hub Navigators, who will be able to signpost you to further advise and any training that you might require.

  • Each individual may attend workshops up to a maximum of 20 hours in total.
  • Each business can send a maximum of 2 members of staff on each course.
  • In order to qualify for a place on the course, the employer/business must be based in Essex.
  • Please note that the workshop may not take place if there are not a minimum of 10 attendees.

This course is funded by BEST Growth Hub and is led by Louise Capra.
